[Bookplate for Hugh John Macdonald] Black ink on white paper. Above the escutcheon on a straight wreath, sits a dexter hand, erased, holding a cross crosslet. Below the wreath a vizored helm with mantling appears. The escutcheon is divided per quarter. The quarterly field near dexter chief is argent (silver) with a lion rampant and near sinister chief, or (gold), is a dexter hand, erased, holding a cross crosslet, gules. The quarterly field near the sinister base displays a fish naiant on water, vert (green) and a lymphad in the dexter base, argent. Below the escutcheon is a banner displaying the originator's Latin motto. 42. [Bookplate for Library of the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute] Black ink on tan paper. Curlicue and straight-line border. Multiple fonts are present. The library title is written in bold and non-bold capital letters, with the institute name in sentence case gothic script. Separated by centered, thin straight lines, there is a left aligned field for class and a right aligned field for card number written in bold serif font. The lending rules are written in italicized serif font. 43. [Bookplate for Library of the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute] Black ink on pale pinkish tan paper. Ornate curlicue border with circular corner designs. Multiple fonts are present. The library title is written in bold and non-bold capital letters, while the institute name is written in title case with gothic script. Separated by thin straight lines, the card number field is written in stylized bold font. The lending rules are written in serif font. 44. [Bookplate for J.G. Grieve by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper. Border features two parallel thin black lines on the outside with a thicker black line for the inner border. The upper-right hand corner has a microscope in profile against a sun with radiant rays. The microscope sits on a striped platform that tapers down to a point. In the upper-left hand corner is an oil lamp with a burning flame sitting on the same striped, tapered platform. In the centre of the two images is a rectangle with an indented top half. A white border surrounds black and white stripes of inconsistent length. Printed, capitalized, serif black text is printed on top. Below is a scene of a desk in a corner. There are two paintings, one on each wall. The one on the left is a nature scene and the one on the right is a landscape with a house and natural elements. On the right of the second painting is a vertical calendar for December 1963 listing Sunday the 24th to Saturday the 30th. The desk has drawers on both sides and one in the centre, all with handles. On top of the desk in the foregrounded left side is a black telephone sitting face down in the retriever. Behind the phone is a tall, thin plant in a white, hour-glass shaped pot. Next to the plant is a lamp with a short, wide, curved shade. In the centre of the back of the desk are four books, spines facing out, between two bookends. To the right of the books is a tall, thin vase with a scalloped edge holding several leafy flowers. To the right of that vase, in the right corner of the desk, is an analogue clock set in an upright square. The clock is set to approximately 4:05. Foregrounded in the right corner of the front of the desk is a book open to the title page. Across the bottom of the bookplate is a banner with curled ribbon ends. On the banner is stylized gothic font. Below the banner is a decorative row of leaves. In the bottom left hand corner is a small white patch with initials printed in black ink. Handwritten note in pencil on the verso. 45. [Bookplate] A stylized floral border surrounds the text, which is written in several different fonts and is found in the middle of the bookplate. The word 'Catholic' is written in a curly font with the words 'Circulating Library' printed in Gothic below. The book number is printed underneath, and there is a line dividing the upper part of the text from the middle, which lists the library rules. Below the library rules is another line, and below this is a hand symbol which points to further information on the library hours. The cost of subscription is given in cents, dating this bookplate after 1858, the year in which currency decimalization came into force in Canada. 46. [Bookplate for Lieutenant Colonel E. L. Caldwell] A simple line border surrounds the text. There are small circles framing each corner. 47. [Bookplate for W. H. Banfield] A picture of the bust of W.H. Banfield above green printed text. A green printed decorative border. 48. [Bookplate for James Stevenson by H. Wilson] A Latin phrase is written on a banner at the top of the plate. Beneath it is a hand ascending from a heraldic silk wreath, holding a crown of leaves.
